Los Cristianos Map and Resort Guide

Los Cristianos: Lying in a sheltered bay on the southern coast of Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands, Los Cristianos, formerly just a tiny fishing village, is now one of the leading holiday resorts on the island, attracting many thousands of visitors each year, who come to enjoy the wonderful climate, fine beaches, lively nightlife and excellent leisure facilities. Now almost completely merged with neighbouring Playa de las Americas, which has in turn merged with the Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos has everything needed for a perfect holiday in the sun.

Los Cristianos History: First documented as the location of a harbour during the 16th century, Los Cristianos operated as a significant port throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, though declined somewhat during the 19th century with the threat of pirate incursions and no fortifications to defend it. Los Cristianos began to be populated only since the mid-nineteenth century, local residents surviving mostly on fishing, a quay was built in 1909 and began exporting produce from a local distillery, plus resin, salt and fish. Agriculture began after its hinterland was irrigated in 1914, with crops of tomatoes and bananas thriving in the warm cimate. A larger port was built in the 1930’s bringing larger vessels and more employment to the area, this was rebuilt in the 1970’s and a ferry service to La Gomera began.

Tourism began during the 1950’s and most of its early visitors came from Sweden and Scandinavia, the main boom occurred during the 1980’s as cheaper flights and package holidays made visiting the Canary Islands more affordable for the working classes. The pleasant year round weather was the main attraction, providing an ideal winter holiday destination.
